We have breastfed wrong in America since the 1960s when, after a generation of NOT breastfeeding in America, we returned to the breast without including the baby's innate ability to find the nipple on her own and latch perfectly.

Contemporary nurses and lactation specialists are not trained in Infant Instinct Breastfeeding. Besides that, here is some background: The Baby Boomer Generation (1946-1964) was, for the most part, not breastfed. It took more than a decade to figure out why women were pregnant again by their 6-week check-up, babies had upper-respiratory infections within a week of birth, asthma-allergies-exema became rampant, and childhood cancer rates were higher than ever seen before. Baby Boomer Babies, then Baby Boomers as children and their parents suffered from detachment disorders--even though they did not know it at the time. The rebellion of the Boomers, when they hit the 1960s and 1970s as adults, turned the country upside down. We/They hadn't been held, nursed--were to be "seen and not heard", not picked up when we cried, etc. All of that was Post-War, "Modern Parenting".
Concerned mothers, the WHO, and La Leche league, to name a few began to campaign for the return to breastfeeding in the mid-60s. But in that Gap Generation we lost the innate Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. Well-intentioned people scrambled back to fix what was wrong but made some grave mistakes.

Janis will help you understand the fact that most problems with establishing breastfeeding including LATCH, are a result of interfering with a baby's inborn abilities to hormonally step/crawl, smell and feel her way to the nipple and latch flawlessly. American Breastfeeding is so flawed that we have had to invent an entirely new vocation: The Lactation Specialist. But most Lactation Specialists are trained to perpetuate the flawed American methods used since the 1960s.
